By Josh Henkin

If we look at the physiques of an Olympic marathon runner versus and Olympic sprinter what body would most people prefer? In my experience as a coach most people like the lean, muscular physique of a sprinter rather than a marathon runner.

By Craig Ballantyne, MS, CSCS

You know who is your worst enemy in the fight against fat? Well-meaning fitness professionals that don't want to make you feel bad for being lazy and eating crap. That's who. Potatoes - Friend or Foe for a Lean-Body?
by Mike Geary

'd like to start a little discussion today about carbohydrates... and in particular, potatoes. Sandbag Training For Ultimate Abs And Core!
By Josh Henkin

Planks, reverse crunches, woodchoppers - all great exercises for improving abdominal strength. however, do these drills really answer our needs of core strength? At a fundamental level, they are great movements, but people often miss two key aspects of proper core conditioning: (1) In most daily activities, the role of the “core” is to maintain proper posture under load or stress. It is often to resist movement rather than producing it. (2) The core is more than abdominal training. Sandbags are the only implement that alters its shape while you lift it. This calls on far more demands from the entire body especially the trunk muscles to help stabilize the weight. Not only do sandbag drills help improve core strength, they also burn an immense amount of calories.

The Best Exercises For Your Lower Abs Revealed
By Christian Finn, MSc.

Some fitness experts will tell you there are distinct "upper and lower" abdominals, which need to be exercised differently.Others say that rectus abdominis (the six-pack look is the result of bands of connective tissue that "cut" into rectus abdominis) is just one muscle, and doing separate exercises for the upper and lower abs is a waste of time. So, who's right?

Correcting Bad Posture With Abdominal Training
By David Grissafi

David: Thank you for your Q & A column – I always look forward to your next installment. I have a question about posture and your abs! I have a very swayed back, and that seems to affect the shape of my abs. My brother is in very good shape and he has the same problem, though not as noticeable as me. Do you have any suggestions on how to correct this, keeping in mind that I play hockey once a week year-round and work as a heavy truck mechanic? I just can’t seem to focus and start a workout regimen.

Seated Hanging Leg Raises - A new approach to an old favorite.
By Nick Nilsson

The hanging leg raise is an excellent abdominal exercise. This variation is not only easier on your lower back but helps to remove the hip flexors from the movement, all the while increasing the contraction on the abs. This exercise targets the abdominal muscles with an extremely intense contraction. The range of motion of the exercise is short but the tension on the abs is excellent.

Vibration Platform Training - Is There Something To It?
By David Grisaffi

Dear David, I was just reading about the Power Plate Vibration machine in a magazine. Apparently Madonna uses it to strengthen and build her muscles, and there was also a positive article about this in the Daily Telegraph. These machines cost at least £2,600! They say it can do in 10 minutes what you would get from an hour of weight training. It was developed years ago from technology used by the Russian astronauts to stop muscle wastage when they were in space. Have you heard of this and do you think it could do what it claims to do? Not that I can afford to buy one, but I might try a class if there is ever one this offered this way

The 7 Deadly Sins Of Baseball-Specific Core Training
By Jon Doyle, MA, RTI, CSCS

In order to develop explosive baseball power, it is vital to train your entire midsection, or core. It's a myth that doing traditional crunches will help you attain a strong, athletic core. You need to perform exercises that are specific to baseball; exercises that work every muscle in your midsection. If you focus on just doing rectus abdominal exercises and not the entire core, you will surely develop a muscular imbalance which will lead to injury. Read on to learn more about this and 6 other deadly baseball (and sports) training sins...

2 Dumbbell Swings - Could This Be The Most Effective Core-Power Exercise EVER?
By Nick Nilsson

What if I told you that, without even moving your abs at all, you could get one of the most intense ab workouts you’ve ever experienced? It's true. You see, oftentimes, the best movements for the abs involve very little bending or flexing of the trunk at all. This is especially true of the exercises that target the deeper core muscles (the transversus and the obliques), which are responsible for stabilizing and transferring power through the core. I know, you're probably wondering, “how the heck can you develop your abs without moving the abs at all?” Well, I’m going to tell you exactly how this is done and believe me, the first time you try this exercise, you’ll never look at your ab workout the same way again!

Ask The Ab Guru: C-Sections, Lower Ab Flab, And Abdominal "Pooch Belly" (And What To Do About It!)

After pregnancy, the body needs to normalize and it takes 9 months or more to get back into physiological balance. This balance is not just hormonally-related but also related to body weight, proper posture and normal muscle tension. If all of these things are not in balance, you will tend to have inflammation that inhibits the inner (muscular) unit and you will have a higher incidence of abdominal wall and inner unit dysfunction. Obviously, C-sections do not help and can make things more challenging. However, if you address several issues (that most people never even think about), then you may be pleasantly surprised with the change in your body fat level and especially the muscle development and they way your abdominal area begins to go from "pooch belly to "flat, washboard abs"...
